Barnet Gift Card Program FAQ

Does Barnet offer a built-in gift card program?

Yes. Barnet has its own fully integrated Gift Card program. There is a one-time setup fee, and you will need to contact Barnet Sales to have the Gift Card module activated and ensure your POS is configured with the correct buttons.

What type of gift cards do I need?

You can print your own cards using any full-service print shop. Ensure that the cards meet these requirements:

  • 12–14 digit barcode

  • Cannot begin with zero

  • Barcode format: Code 128

Barcode will then be scannable at the till for loading and redemption.

Barnet’s preferred supplier is CardWorks North America, but any printer that can produce Code 128 barcodes will work.

When is a gift card activated?

All gift cards remain inactive until sold at the till. Once sold/loaded, the value is stored electronically and managed through Barnet.

Can gift cards be used as a payment method like other tender types?

Yes. Gift cards can be used:

  • As full payment, or

  • As partial payment alongside another tender type

Are there reports to track gift card balances?

Yes. Barnet provides Gift Card Reports that display:

  • All activated cards

  • Current balances

  • Transaction history

These reports help you track liability and reconcile sales.

Do I need terms and conditions on my gift cards?

Yes. Because gift cards are treated like cash once loaded, we strongly recommend adding terms and conditions on the back of each card, such as:

  • Non-refundable policy

  • Lost/stolen card policy

  • Expiry details (if applicable under your provincial regulation)

How do I reorder more gift cards?

You do not need to contact Barnet to reorder cards.

To generate new card numbers:

  • Take the last sequence you used

How do I reorder more gift cards?

  • Change the first digit (e.g., 522000… → 622000…)

  • Send this updated range to your printer and request the quantity you need

Your printer will generate a new batch of cards based on this format.

Can I reload an existing gift card?

Yes. Existing cards can be reloaded at the till with any amount you choose.

What denominations can I load onto a gift card?

Gift cards can be loaded with any amount, based on your store’s preference.

How can customers check their gift card balance in-store?

Staff can scan the gift card at the till to view the current balance through the Gift Card balance function.

Can I deactivate or void a gift card?

Yes. If needed (e.g., card lost or loaded by accident) a manager can void a card as long as it has not been redeemed.

Can I customize my gift card design?

Absolutely. You can choose your own design, branding, colours, and messaging. Your printer will simply embed the required 12–14 digit Code 128 barcode.

Do I need a special scanner for gift cards?

No. Any barcode scanner that works with your Barnet POS will scan.

Are gift cards included in my database backup?

Yes. All activated cards, balances, and transactions are stored in your system database and included in regular backups.

Can I track gift card liability?

Yes. Your Gift Card Report provides outstanding balances and activation history, which your bookkeeper can use for liability tracking.

What is the minimum and maximum load amount?

Barnet does not enforce limits, but most stores choose something like:

  • Minimum: $10

  • Maximum: $250–$500

You can set your own store policy.

Can gift cards be used to purchase restricted items (like liquor)?

Yes. Gift cards act as a form of tender, not a discount or coupon.

They can be used on any product you sell.

Can a customer use more than one gift card on a single transaction?

Yes. Multiple cards may be redeemed in one sale.
